Research Interests:
Our laboratory explores connections between major and trace elements in biogeochemical cycles across space and time. Trace elements like iron and manganese can serve as cofactors in metalloenzymes or as terminal electron acceptors for anaerobic microbial respiration. Our lab is interested in using extant biochemistry to reconstruct the co-evolution of geochemistry and biology. Two current projects are focused on: 1) the evolution of aerobic respiration from anaerobic respiration; 2) the influence of oxygen on the metal content of bacterial ribosomes.
